As per one of Associated Press reporter, he witnessed one of the men storming at the stage, Chautauqua Institution. With him getting to the stage, he started punching/stabbing Rushdie while he was just getting introduced. It is still unclear whether Rushdie, 75, got pushed or he fell on the floor. Either way, the man got restrained.

Soon after this incident, a group of people surrounded Rushdie, held up his legs, for presumably sending or maintaining an increased blood flow to the chest.
